Looe Cornwall England

Even though there was a bit of noise last night we slept well. We began our day having a walk out again along the Mount Batten Breakwater and up to the tower.

We then crossed over the river into Plymouth, parking in Hoe (£2.20/1hr) where there is a large parkland with memorials to naval men and explorers like Drake and Cook that had set sail from the harbour many years ago.

Unfortunately the rain came in earnest so we scampered back to Bluey and decided we may as well go and look at a National Trust property. On the other side of the bridge we finally cross into Cornwall.

It wasn’t too far to Cotehele which is a large estate on the Tamar River. It has been the ancestral home of the Edgcumbe family from 1353 to 1947. We parked down near the quay and hoping to see the mill in action but it wasn’t to be. We had a look in the little museum about the history of shipping here.

Then we braved the rain and walked up to the impressive house built in the late 1400’s with Tudor and Medieval roots.

We started in the Great Hall with its collection of armoury and 2 2.5m long whale jaw bones.

The rest of the rooms have their walls covered with tapestries from the 15th and 16th centuries which make them quite dark but homely. There was also original furniture from that era.

We have a brief wander through a part of the garden but it’s just too wet to explore the vast estate any further.

We were kindly invited to Tim and Indie’s house near Looe whom we had met in Spain in 2014. We had a lovely afternoon and evening chatting about this and that and of course travels in our motorhomes..past, present and in the future. They drove us into the pretty port of Looe and we enjoyed a walk here.

A famous local, Nelson the seal.

This building used as the police station in ‘Beyond Paradise’ series.
The flowers from this hydrangea was used in several films including the wedding bouquet in Poldark.
Dinner was at their local, just 3mins walking distance from their house. We had a delicious meal and were then treated to music from some talented locals. It was fantastic. What a fabulous start to Cornwall.
