Skellig Ring, Valentia Island, Ireland

Day 85/Ireland 19
Travelled: 110km along Skellig Ring Road, Valentia Island and Ring of Kerry on Iveragh Peninsula
Visited: Portmagee, Bray Head, Knightstown, Waterville, Sneem
Stay: Sneem Pier  N51.8344 W9.9032

It was another full day in Ireland as we made most of the beautiful sunshine (although the winds from the Atlantic were bitterly cold). Our first stop was Portmagee which is the main fishing port for South Kerry. As we walked around we learnt a bit more about the place.

Another Wild Atlantic Way sign.

We then crossed the waters via a bridge onto Valentia Island. As the rain held off we walked the 5km Bray Head loop (€2 parking fee).

At the headland was a Napoleonic tower and we were rewarded with some amazing coastal views including the Skellig Rocks. The Monastic Site on one of the rocky island has recently been made famous by Star Wars and thus popular to visit.

After lunch we circumnavigated the rest of Valentia Island. Along the way we had a look at the slate quarry and the grotto.

Again we had some terrific views, this time of the lighthouse and the bay.

At the other end of the Island we had a walk around Knightstown. It’s quite busy here as there is ferry to the mainland and cafes, bars and restaurants.

Take a close look at the second offence...
In 1858 the first successful Transatlantic telegraph cable was connected to Newfoundland (Canada).

The old telegraph cable stations and quarters.

We finished the lap of the Island, crossed the bridge back to Portmagee and then continued the drive along Skellig Ring road which officially finishes at Waterville.
Along the way we had a look at a few sites...

Lookout at top of The Cliffs of Kerry.

A memorial for Americans lost during the war.

We strolled along the promenade in Waterville and got a photo with Charlie Chaplin (who holidayed here regulary).

We went over the highest pass 215m

Further on we decided to call it a day in Sneem. A colourful town catering to holiday makers.

We enjoyed a pint at Dan Murphy’s pub and then settled in down at the pier.
