Travelled: 62km
Stay: Kilkenny -Wolfe Tone Parking €2pd N52.6553 W7.2485
Visited:Kilkenny Castle -€8pp/€6 seniors

This morning we headed north to Kilkenny. Our plans for the next 2 weeks are to continue inland to Dublin then follow the coast down to Cork where we will take the ferry across to Roscoff, France. We arrived early enough in Kilkenny to manage to get a parking spot close to town. We went to get a map from the tourist office and had a quick walk around before returning to Bluey to watch the Bombers play in the last AFL Home and Away game against The Pies.

Back in town we admire some of the buildings, many made from the local black limestone known as Kilkenny marble. Along the main streets were the usual pubs and shops.

The old Town Hall

Rothe House where a rich merchant lived.

A small alley way where they used to sell butter as it was cooler there.

They love Hurling  here. Unfortunately Kilkenny lost the finals.

We had a look at St.Mary’s Cathedral,

the Black Abbey

and St.Canice’s Cathedral.

We then went to visit the 12th century Castle set at the other end of town. Since to 14th century until 1967 the Butler family lived here. Two wings of the Castle have been restored to their 19th century splendour.

A chamber with a impression of a willow wicker ceiling used as a support during construction.

A mahogany staircase.

Drawing room

View of Kilkenny from the Castle.

We then had a stroll through the gardens of Butler House and the art precinct.

After a rest in Bluey we ventured out again for a pint and some traditional Irish music.
