Vikos Gorge Greece

Travelled:271km tolls €9
Visited:Area near Vikos Gorge, Zagori Region
Stay: picnic area near Monodendri N39.8775 E20.7454

We had a pleasant drive to Ioannina opting to take the minor road most of the way except for one section that ended costing €9 in tolls. In Greece motorhomes have been added to the truck and bus category resulting in tolls being 3 times more than a car. Most countries will charge by weight ie over or under 3.5 tons, in Greece they use height ie over 2.2m! So we have been enjoying the scenic routes as much as we can and take the toll road only when we think that the time and petrol saving is proportionate with the cost being charged.

We had a quick look at the lake in Ioannina and continued on to the Zagori Region, inspired by Mike and Pam’s visit a few years ago.

We drove up to a Vikos Gorge lookout which gave us a most impressive view. It is one of the deepest in the world at 990m in proportion to its width.

We then returned down the road to Minodendri, a quaint village with lovely white stone buildings and narrow paved roads.

We walked a short distance to the abandoned Monastery of Saint Paraskevi built in the 1400’s on the edge of a Vikos Gorge. There was a lovely little chapel and a terrace to take in another view point of the gorge.

As it was getting late in the day we only ventured a few km down the road to a picnic area with a view of the village and hopefully spend a quiet and cool night at 1000m alt.
