Danube Valley Germany

Travelled 114km
Stay:Donaueschingen - motorhome parking free, no services N47.9474 E8.5118
Visited: Sigmaringen Castle, Beuron Church, Tuttlingen, Danube sinkhole, Source of the Danube

After a peaceful night we headed for Sigmaringen. We managed to find some street parking close to the centre and walked through the pedestrian area at the foot of the castle.

We had a danish and coffee for breakfast and then made our way to the castle which dominates the skyline, perched on a rocky cliff above the Danube River.

Having been extensively redesigned since 1077, it is still owned by the Hohenzollern family who unified Germany in the 19th Century. We decided to do a tour (€9ea) and we’re quite impressed with some of the rooms (no photos..so thanks google).

We then followed the Danube River to Beuron which offered some beautiful and dramatic landscape.

In their village an enormous baroque Monastery was founded in 1077. Most of the buildings were from the 17thC and we managed to have a look inside the church.

It’s part of the Compestella walk

Further up river we came to Tuttlingen, a larger town, which we walked around after lunch and the decided to continue on.

A fountain where the children pushed down on a platform to make the water flow.

We were curious to see and learn about the Danube Sinkhole (info refer to photo).

Parking N47.9320 E8.7487 there were good facilities provided in a cafe, toilets, showers, picnic area and playground as well as charging station for electric bikes.

From here we drove to Donaueschingen where the Danube begins. From our parking area we had a pleasant walk through a beautiful garden.

At the foot of the church there is a stone basin Donauquelle where a spring bubbles up from the ground, the water flows out of a temple into a water course which then becomes the longest river in Western Europe. This year we have spent many nights besides the Danube in various countries all the way to the Black Sea in Romania.

We then strolled around the town before returning back to Bluey for a home cooked meal.
