Stay: with family in Port Lazo, Paimpol
We admired the beautiful stone buildings as we drove along the departmental roads through some beautiful villages and country side. Combourg had plenty of character with plenty of cafes and restaurants for locals and tourists that came to visit the chateau. Dinan (visited in 2013) is also exceptional, set on top of a hill with its port below us as we drove over the bridge.
The it was on the free motorway through St.Brieux, the largest town in the area. Over dinner we were discussing why there are no tolls on the Brittany motorways. Patrick said it was due to a condition of the marriage between Anne de Bretagne and King Charles VIII in 1532. Google came up with a couple more... Charles de Gaulle saying thank you to the Breton soldiers, another was that de Gaulle deemed that Paris was the center of Europe and that the roads in Brittany led to nowhere in particular ! It could be all of the reasons but it is also known that the Bretons are very good at protesting, stopping the tolls rule from being changed.
Anyway, we decided to explore a bit and took some small coastal roads stopping at Point Roselier and had a look at the memorial of the lives lost at sea and had a walk along the coastal track. Unfortunately there were no beautiful views as heavy fog blanketed us.
We continued on up the coast having lunch at a great Motorhome stop, Le Palus Plage. .
Then we had a stroll along the harbour wall at Brehec en Plouha before zig zagging our way through one lane wide roads to Port Lazo.
My cousin, Patrick and his wife Pierrette, have a beautiful home with an amazing view of the bay. It had once been a hotel and restaurant which they renovated a few years ago.
