Towards the Bungle Bungles

On our way out of Wyndham this morning, we drove up to the top of the Bastion Range to the Five Rivers lookout. What a lovely spot to have breakfast overlooking the Cambridge Gulf, the surrounding escarpments and the port area.

Take note of the brooms supplied and those big rock slabs for the tables and benches

View over the Wyndham

We then drove 102km to Kununurra. Our main objective was to fill up Buster with fuel ($1.82) and the fridge. We also stopped at one of the most iconic landmarks in Kununurra, the Diversion Dam, built to contain the flow of water from Lake Argyle.

Designed to divert and regulate the flow of water from the Ord River into the Ord Irrigation area. The dam consists of 20 radial gates mounted within a concrete framework and spillway structure. The water is gravity fed into channels to service the area to the north of the town and is pumped into the Packsaddle Plains area to the south. The dam, 6kms west of Kununurra, forms part of the Victoria Highway.

The new viewing area on the western side of the dam provides a safe place for the public to enjoy stunning views of both the Upper and Lower Ord River while learning about the impressive engineering of the dam and the important connection to country shared by the Miruwung people.

Then made our way back to Great Northern Highway turn off towards the Bungle Bungle Range in the Purnululu National Park.

Haven’t seen a salty yet..

Beautiful views and lovely smooth roads

Back to road trains and large loads

The Dunham 24hr rest area looked ok at midday but we predicted it would be very busy by the end of the day especially with toilets and dump point, so we continued for another 20km on to O’Donnell Range/Doon Doon lookout for a quieter night.

212km today
