Before we left the caravan park in Katherine we thought we had better look at campground availability in Litchfield National Park. Not surprisingly there wasn’t many vacant sites but we managed to book 3 nights starting Sunday. So we had 4 nights to fill in. We had been recommended a free camp on the banks of Edith River (not far from Edith Falls National Park which was also booked out) just 50km north from Katherine. Arriving at 11am we were lucky to get a spot next to the rapids that also had a deep enough part to for us to get in for a refreshing dip as the temperature soared to 32°.
Not long after Gavin and Robyn joined us and we spent a lovely couple of days together.
They continued on Friday morning but we decided that it was too good a spot to leave and so we stayed an extra night. We did some planning and booking for Darwin. Also got some washing done. Buster even got a bit of a wash.
Pine Creek was essentially a gold mining town established after teams building the Overland Telegraph Line in 1870 found gold while digging holes for the posts. At its peak over 2,000 Chinese miners working in the area and there were over 15 mines. Today it is a remnant of a past time. Another interest is the Northern Railway (1889-1976) exhibits at the old station.
We then made our way to Robin Falls, another popular free camp. Arriving at 11am we were lucky to get a spot next to the creek. There were a lot of day trippers too walking up to the falls. We managed to go while there was a midday lull. We didn’t bother with a swim at the falls as the water was a bit murky, especially that it was lovely and clear near Buster.
