Australia Outback NSW Sturt

Today saw us travel 129km Leaving Tibooburra and ending at Pooles Grave site (-29.662312, 141.793683). We began driving about 25km to the Mount Wood Homestead area in Sturt National Park.

There was a bit to explore starting with the Outdoor Pastoral Museum that had the remains of where they scoured/clean the wool before baling and transportation. Sometimes they would reduce the weight of the wool by 50% after removing the dust and dirt. There were also what was left of farming tools.

Next we walked around the Homestead where people still live.

Haven’t seen this much water in the park..

We ended our visit at the shearer’s quarters and shed.

The old showers
The troughs brought back memories
The remains if the old swing bridge

The dry creek bed with the remains of an old car ...
Over the bridge to the shearer’s shed

Too rusty to sharpen

In Tibooburra we had a look at the Pioneer Park with all sorts of information and relics including a replica of the boat Sturt brought with him on his expedition to find the inland sea.

After refueling and buying a few supplies from the roadhouse we were on our way back down the Silver City Hwy. Turning off at Milparinka we continued a further 25km to Sturt’s Cairn that he got his men to build whilst they were stranded by drought at Glen Depot camp. A short walk took us to the top of Mt.Poole offering amazing 360° views.

8 km back we drove into the camp area and to where Mr Poole, Sturts second in command is buried after dying from scurvy.

As it was mid afternoon and White Cliffs is over 3 hours away, we decided to camp here the night.

Our neighbours.
