Day 102/Ireland 35
Travelled:70km along Wild Atlantic Way from Crookhaven to Baltimore
Stay: Baltimore -parking near marina N51.4850 W9.3724
Visited:Altar Wedge Tomb, Schull, Ballydehob, Skibbereen, Baltimore
We had a quick stroll in Crookhaven this morning as the clouds had blown away during the night and we were afforded views of the surrounding area.
We then followed the Wild Atlantic Way stopping at the Altar Wedge Tomb, built about 4000 years ago. Later during the 18th century it was used for rituals.
Another Napoleonic tower.
Traffic jam on the Wild Atlantic Way...
We then continued on to Schull, parking at the harbour. We enjoyed an extensive chat to a local fisherman working in his boat. We discussed the fishing industry in particular the effects of joining the EU and the unknown of the effects of Brexit to come. It has been a common concern among the Irish, especially the farmers. The town is quite small but apparently it is overtaken by tourists during the summer holidays. We went for a walk along the main street and then the foreshore.
Our next stop was Ballydehob, parking near the 12 arch railway stone bridge. Trains ran through here from 1886 to 1947.
We went for a walk through town and decided to go bit further on. We had a quick shop stop in the busy market town of Skibbereen. Our final destination for today was Baltimore. We went to have a look at the Beacon built in 1849 which is 15m high and gazed out onto the lovely cliffs.
We then returned into town to park up for the night being joined by an Irish motorhome. After dinner we enjoyed a stroll around and then called it a day.
