Port Lazo Brittany France

Day 105-107/France 8
Travelled: Ferry Cork-Roscoff, 106km to Port Lazo, Brittany France
Stay: Port Lazo with family
Visited: Paimpol, Valley of the Saints Carnoet, Brehat Island by ferry

We felt very lucky to have had a very smooth crossing from Cork to Roscoff.
We then made our way to Port Lazo where my cousin Patrick and Pierrette live. Along the way we stopped to have breakfast a lovely seaside village.

Very small doorway

After our arrival we set off for lunch which was delicious and very filling...not used to eating 3 courses!

Fois gras for entrée

So we promptly went for a walk along the coast to help the digestion.

On our way back we went to have a look at the oyster festival in Paimpol and of course bought some for dinner.

Trying out the local beer

Abalone for dinner

The next day was a bit cloudy and eventually rained but that didn’t stop us from being amazed at the 100 or so granite carved Brittany saints displayed in a field in Carnoët. Some where modern in their design but all showed off the skills of the artists who designed and carved them. The aim is to have a 1000 in total in the future. You can also watch them at work. It is free to visit and only costs €2 for parking.

The following day we woke to sunshine and caught the 11am ferry (€8.80pp return) to Bréhat Island. There are actually 2 main islands North and South joined by a small causeway. It is famous for its pink granite rocky coast line and beautiful flowers in the spring and summer. Many people visit especially during the summer months.

There are plenty of walking/cycle tracks to take to all the attractions. You need to walk/cycle 3.3km from the port straight to the Paon lighthouse on the North Island. There are no vehicles on the island except for a few local tractors. We did a few routes and had a look at the Chapelle of St.Michel propped up on rocks offering great views of the island and coast line.

We also saw the old Birlot watermill that uses the sea currents.

There are also lots of fancy houses here as the rich and famous like the solitude of the island life.

We had tasty moulles and frittes for lunch in one of the many restaurants in the village.

We then walked to Paon Lighthouse situated on pink granite rocks.

On our return towards the port we went to visit the Glass Studio, situated in an old citadel.

Unfortunately the glass blowers had just closed, although we could look and buy some products in the shop. As we left the island the tide had come up, giving a different look to the area. We finished the day with a delicious BBQ dinner and a game of cards.
