Travelled:110km to Poitiers and then Lussac les Châteaux
Stay: Lussac les Châteaux- parking next to the lake. N46.4044 E0.7284
It took us about an hour from Airvault to reach our shady parking spot in Poitiers. It was a short walk into the old town. Since Roman times it has been a stopping off point for travellers between Paris/Bordeaux. Little remains from those times, although the town boasts one of the oldest churches in Europe- the Baptistry was built during the Roman era.
It was in the Middle Ages that the town came into its own again, with the construction of several impressive buildings. The cathedral was built in the late 1100’s over the ruins of a Roman basilica. It has noteworthy stain glass windows and an impressive 18th C organ.
We continued on into the heart of the old quarter to admire the Notre Dame la Grande church.
Once again you can never be prepared for what lies behind the door. The main part of the church’s vaults and columns colourful painted decor dates back to the 1800’s.
In the choir there is still evidence of paintings from the Romanesque period(11th C).
The church’s facade is also very decorated. During special events and in summer it is lit up in the original colours it was once painted in.
We continued with our explore of the city passing a few more significant buildings.
We then returned to Bluey and went to do some shopping before seeking out a shady spot for tonight as we experience another hot day. We were lucky to get one of the 2 flat spots next to the lake in Lussac des Châteaux and took it easy.
