Cobh Ireland

Day 99/Ireland 32
Travelled:83km from Dungarvan to Ardmore, Youghal and Cobh
Stay:Cobh dedicated motorhome parking €10/24hrs and free service point. N51.8471 W8.3072

After enjoying a lovely chat to our children for Father’s Day we headed off for the day. We drove past the infamous Dicks Field (often mentioned on the Total Motorhome Ireland Facebook page) and stopped in Ardmore.

We had a look at the very well preserved round Tower in the grounds of St Declan’s cathedral and cemetery. It is said to be Ireland’s oldest Christian site.

We then enjoyed a pleasant walk through this small harbour/beach village.

Our next stop was in Youghal which was once medieval walled port town.

As we walked down the Main Street we came across the Clock Gate Tower which was built in 1777 and has a varied history.

Tynte’s Castle was a 15th century Norman Tower used by a local merchant family as a house and a store for valuable goods.

Boyle’s Almhouse was built by the 1st Earl of Cork in 1613 as cheap accommodation for return soldiers or their widows.

The lovely 1796 St.Mary’s Catholic Church had an amazing interior roof structure made from 800 year old oak timber beams.

We walked along a short section of the town walls built during the 1200’s.

We then continued on to Cobh (pronounced Cov) and parked up in the aire with nearly 29 other motorhomes. The most we been with in our 3 months so far!

We walked into town and went to have a look at the very impressive St.Colemans Cathedral. The guide told us that all the interior stonework had recently been cleaned by spraying it was a product that could be best described as a face mask. As it dries it becomes a rubber like substance that can be pulled off, taking the dirt off to reveal a clean surface. There were many statues and the mosaic tile work was also beautiful.

As we walked back into town the carillon bells played their hourly tune.
We ventured into one of the many pubs that was full with locals enjoying a pint whilst watching the Gaelic Football final between Dublin and Kerry. It was a close game which eventually ended in a draw. So they will need to play again in 2 weeks time. We chatted to an Irish couple who also are travelling in their motorhome. After sharing a few stories we made our way back to Bluey.
