Travelled:96km from Gargilesse to Cluis, La Châtre and Vallon en Sully
Stay: Vallon en Sully- parking on Berry Canal N45.5350 E2.6234
After a very peaceful night we ventured off along country roads less travelled towards Cluis. Once again we were reminded of Australia due to the dry conditions of the area. We headed for the Viaduct and after breakfast we walked the 500m over the top.
We then descended 43m to the valley floor to admire the construction built in 1901.
Unfortunately due to a low population the train service could not prosper and so was discontinued in 1952. We parked in town and took some photos of the ‘alternative’ circus.
The market hall was also impressive.
Signage I’d very important here.
We then made our way to La Châtre. We luckily arrived at the tourist office just before it closed for lunch and got a map of the main sites. The majority of which dated in the 1800’s and in particular related to George Sands- a pen name used by a popular female author who consequently used the town for inspiration for many of her works.
Around the village square..
A well .
The tanners quarter along the Indre River..a little silted at the moment
The Chauvigny Keep built in 1424. A prison from 1734 to 1937. Recently a George Sand Museum but closed for renovations.
St.Germain Church rebuilt in 1904.
Half timbered house mentioned in George Sand’s work.
After our visit we pointed Bluey towards Vallon en Sully and parked under the trees on the banks of the Berry Canal. After many years of deliberation it was finally completed in 1839 with works mainly being carried out by 1820’s Spanish prisoners of war. Unfortunately after it’s closure in 1955 there is only a 15km segment of the 261km that is still being used.
