Travelled:100km
Stay:Loch Ceann Hulabhig Layby parking B8011 N58.1699 W6.7197
Visited:Gearrannan Blackhouse Village, Carloway Broch, Calanais Stones, Uig Beach, Miavaig Scenic Drive
We were on the road early again so we arrived at the Blackhouse Village in Gearrannan well before it’s official opening time (9:30am). There is a museum here but most of the houses are rented accomodation. We walked around admiring the buildings and then popped back into Bluey.
Mark watched an exciting game played by the Bombers. We then stopped off to see the Carloway Broch, which is in unfortunately closed atm so we couldn’t get a closer look.
One of the main attractions on the Island are the Callandish Standing Stones. There are about 12 sites around the area but we visited the main 3. We parked at the visitors centre and walked up to Calanais I, the major site with 13 stones forming a slightly flattened ring around a huge central stone. Once inside the ring there had been a small tomb. There was also a row of stones heading towards the ring.
We then drove back along the main road and stopped to look at Calanais II (5 stones).
Calanais III consisted of 12 stones in a ring with 4 stones inside it.
Having taken the appropriate photos we continued on to the Scallop Shack in Miavaig. Mark had scallops and I had seafood chowder.
Could use a lick of paint.
It is also possible to buy fresh produce to takeaway. The family have been collecting scallops from the loch for 30 years. 3 divers go out 4 days a week and collect a bag each day (not sure how many that is). What they don’t cook or sell at the shack, they deliver to the mainland.
We then walked off lunch along Uig Beach.
This is where they found the Uig Chess pieces in the dunes.
We were hoping it was not a galloping tide as we had to go out a long way to reach the water. We then doubled back and drove a circular scenic route from Miavaig.

This boat is definitely not sea worthy
Camp ground at Bhaltos Beach...too many people for us!
We had a look at a memorial for the clearances in the area.
As we were making our way back along the B8011, we decided to stay next to the loch for the night.
