Isle of Lewis & Harris Day 4, Scotland

Day 49/Scotland 26
Travelled:151km
Stay: near Urgha/Laxadale Lochs - carpark, bin, hiking trails N57.9045 W6.7560
Visited: Lemreway on B8060, Hushinish on B887

After a peaceful sleep and our morning coffee we set off to explore more of the Island. Our destination was Lemreway on the B8060.

We thought these were sheep in the distance , but they are plastic bags full of peat.

This was a classic ‘it’s not the destination but the journey to get there’. Having arrived at the end of the road ...it was just a community pier used by the fish farm. After a cooked breakfast (it is Sunday after all), we doubled back 25km back to the main road the A859.

A little further south we passed the border into North Harris  and then turned right onto B887 to Hushinish.

We had beautiful vistas all the way along and we were rewarded with a gorgeous white sandy beach at the end, which proved very popular especially on a Sunday afternoon. We managed to turn around and then someone left so we could park up and enjoy this lovely place for a little while. Mark even had a swim.

As we are leaving to go back to the main land tomorrow, we decided we needed to move on. We then travelled back along the B887 and stopped along the way to admire the views.

Modern buildings

We passed the castle Amhuinnsuidhe, which was traditionally the home of the private landlords of North Harris since 1865 (it is still privately owned).

Sneaky photo of front foyer...they left the door open!

The mouth of the Abhainn Mhor River, which tumbles into the loch, is a spectacular salmon leap.

We then stopped to walk 2km to the Eagle Observatory, which offered spectacular views up the glen. Unfortunately we didn’t see a Golden Eagle but spotted a couple of deers up on the ridge.

We drove past the old Bunabhainneadarra whaling station, closed in 1953. At its busiest 50 employees worked here producing the highest yield of whale oil outside of Iceland.

We then travelled along the main road through Tarbert and out to Urgha where we decided to call it a day.
