Travelled:77km
Visited: Bouillon Belgium, France -Sedan and Charleville
Stay: Bogny-sur-Meuse: aire free parking and service point, on the river in town. N49.858429 E4.743350
We started our day with a walk into the village of Bouillon that was built within the loop of the River Semois with its fortress on the rock above. There has been a fortress here since 988 and in 1676 Vauban made some upgrades. It ceased its military role in 1853. The village has a lovely holiday atmosphere and we enjoyed our stroll before it got too busy. There were lots of large hotels and cafe/restaurants indicating it is a popular place. We saw campers in a parking lot right in town which would also have been a great spot except we had shade where we were.
After enjoying the view from the castle we drove into France to Sedan. There was free parking near the castle which is said to be the largest fortified medieval castle in Europe. We must admit we were awe struck by the high walls and large inner courtyard.
We visited the church with its interesting barrel vaulted ceiling.
After a walk around town we continued on to Charleville-Mézières, the capital of the Ardennes department. We parked in the free aire (with service point) that is situated next to the campsite and boat harbour.
We had passed here in 2013 but didnt stay as the aire was full. In 1606 an Italian Prince named Charles I, nephew of King Henry IV of France, built this town next to Mezieres. The highlight of the city is the Ducal Square which is stunning with its grand buildings and arcades.
We strolled through the square to have a look at St Remi les Monts church.
We then made our way to Winston Churchill Square where the famous international puppetry school can be found.
We walked throught the pedestrian zone and looked at the statue of the towns founder then made our way back to Bluey.
It was just too hot (39°c) to stay here without shade so we took to the road to Bogny-sur-Meuse, which had a free aire on the banks of the river. All official spots were taken but taking a lead from a fellow camper, we parked on the lawn and soon enough the storm came to cool things down. Thank goodness...
