Battle of Fromelles France

Travelled: 75km
Visited: Museum of the Battle of Fromelles
Stay:Richebourg-aire, free parking, €2 water/electricity, nice spot N50°34.826' E2°44.792'

We didn't hit the road until 11:30 having spent the morning chatting with family, giving Bluey a bit of a clean up and filling and dumping. Our destination today was Fromelles, France. On the way we stopped at a motorhome accessories shop and bought some toilet chemicals.

We then went to look at a campsite near Lille for when we go to London for 2 weeks seems reasonable for €5.35/night in storage and he offered to drop us off at the train station (20min to journey to Lille).

Ahhh... Back to the narrow french country roads with deep ditches!

We arrived at the Fromelles museum and after a bite to eat, we paid €6.50ea and we were given an audioguide. We learnt of the battle that had taken place here on the 19 July 1916 which included the 5th Australian Division. It was a tragic 24hours of which had over 5,500 casualties. The day after the battle the Germans buried British and Australian dead in mass graves near Pheasant Wood. The soldiers were reported missing in action and the place was forgotten about until 2009 when archaeological excavations unearthed the remains of 250 men. Some have been identified and all have now been reinterred in the cemetery.

We then drove through some pretty countryside to a very tidy aire and we were later welcomed by the Mayor!

After dinner we strolled into the village and we were once again awed by the church building which also had information on the battle and destruction that had taken place here in WWI.
