Bastogne War Museum Belgium

Travelled:123km
Visited: Bastogne War Museum
Stay:Bouillon-free parking and service point. Lovely town. GPS N49.791039 E5.057660

We arrived in Bastogne nice and early and decided to visit the War Museum, one of the three on offer in the town ( the others were the Barracks and on the Ardennes). Whilst we waited for it to open we visited the star shaped American Memorial which lists the various units who fought in the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. They had many casualties. It was here that General McAuliffe famously responded "Nuts" when asked by the Germans if the Americans wanted to surrender as the American held Bastogne became surrounded by German troops. The situation improved when Patton's tanks broke through the encirclement on the 26 December. The museum explained WWII as a whole and then the Battle of the Bulge especially here in Bastogne, with audioguides and 3 movies through the eyes of 4 individuals. 5 hours later we were enjoying a much deserved lunch and we were then on our way.
We drove through some lovely countryside and forests to Bouillon which we will visit tomorrow.
