Heidelberg to the Rhine

Travelled:158km
Visited:Heidelberg
Stay: Worms on the Rhine at a motorhome parking area €4/24hr, services available at pub GPS N49.63458 E8.37513

We headed into Heidelberg this morning. Although there are lots of parking areas we were told at the tourist office that the best area was near the station just at the edge of the old quarter. Unfortunately we could not find it, as we could not turn around we continued along the road beside the river for about 5km before we were able to park. It was free and only a short and easy ride away. Perfect. (On the way back through Heidelberg we saw 6 or so motorhomes parked near the bridge).

Any way, after locking our bikes up to a fence, we proceeded to look at all the main sights as per the map.

We also spent a bit of time in the Christmas Shop (and no, Mark did not buy any more lights!)

We did manage to emmerse ourselves in the local culture by partaking in a Heidelberg beer and sausage!

Then it was on the funicular up to the Schloss (palace). The red sandstone buildings look striking on top of the hill even though it is partly in ruins due to war and lightning. We admired the Renaissance architecture before looking out at the view of the city.

This is the world's largest wine cask. It has a capacity of 220,000L and is made from 130 oak trees!

We then went to visit the Pharmacy Museum and wondered around the garden before making our way back to Bluey.

We decided to drive to Worms on the Rhine River. It took us a little longer than expected as there were road works on the autobarn and we could only travel at 20km per hour! (Not all the way thank goodness).
We parked up, had some dinner and then had a walk along the Rhine, watching the boats - both pleasure and industrial ones. We also marvelled at the old gate house that still has a busy road coming through it. We are looking forward to exploring the town tomorrow.
