Day 12, France 12
Travelled: 73km to Quimper, Penmarch and Loctudy (free motorhome parking 47.8336,-4.1712)Due to Quimper being a large city and a very popular tourist destination, we decamped right after our morning coffee which paid off with no traffic all the way to the centre of town and we had our pick of parking spots.
It has always been a prosperous town as it is situated at the confluence of 2 rivers.
The historic centre boasts narrow cobblestone streets and alleyways lined with half timbered buildings and that open up to charming squares.
One was named ‘Butter Square’ where winter butter (salted) was sold….now it’s crêperies that dominate the square.
We popped in to have a look at the fresh produce sold in the Food Hall and walked through the market.
The Saint-Corentin Cathedral sits in the heart of the city which took 3 centuries to build and is impressive inside and out.
Sections of the ramparts that protected the old town still exist.
The Locmaria district is the birthplace for the well known Quimper pottery. In particular the bowls with the Breton couple in costume are painted in.
Having enjoyed our visit we were ready to continue our journey to Penmarch where 3 lighthouses stand. The most prominent is the 60m high Eckmuhl lighthouse inaugurated in 1897 and built from local Keraanton granite.
We ended the day further along the coast in Loctudy, both a fishing port and seaside resort village.
