Cognac, Charente, France

Day 18 Travelled: 12km to Cognac parking for motorhomes next to the river and historic centre (45.6983,-0.3323)

We finally managed to book 2 new tyres for Bluey after some difficulties finding a retailer that could order tyres to suit camping-cars and be able to instal them. It was trickier than we thought and required calling several different companies and locations. In the end we are getting Continental Vanocamper tyres via Euromaster in DAX on Tuesday for €350.
So with another item for Bluey ticked off the list we ventured a mere 12 km to our next destination, Cognac and yes this is the town the drink is named after. It is a variety of brandy made from specified grapes and distilled twice then aged in French oak barrels. The various grades depends on how long it is aged in the barrel- VS (very special) is aged 2years, VSOP (Very Special Old Pale) 4 years, XO(Extra Old) 10 years, XXO 14 years. Cognac is classified by the distinctive soils the grapes are grown in. Although there are close to 200 producers of Cognac only a handful that import overseas.
The tourist office had a walking tour map of the historic town which we managed to mostly follow. The information boards complemented the tour.
Here is the view across the Charente river from our Bluey parking spot.
The Hôtel de Ville situated in a lovely garden setting.

The Château de Cognac where King Francois I was born.
Please read as it saves me from plagiarising…haha
King Francois demolishing the Italians and the Swiss… why ? Because he could !
A significant building in the the same square..

We continued on following the map. We tried to follow this little guy around town but we just ended up getting confused as it was not the same route as the map.
But we did manage to find  a few of the significant sites.

Not very often is the painting inside the church is still in such condition .
Another cognac distillery.

Back along the river...

At a cross roads

A significant building in its day
More significant architectural features

We returned to Bluey for moules for lunch.
Feeling very happy
Omg there all gone!
Lots of baby crabs in amongst the moules

Then we had another stroll in town and along the Charente River.

We ventured in one of the big four cognac producers. Founded in 1765.

Martell is one of the oldest of the big four cognac houses founded in 1715 and owned by Pernod Ricard.

We decided to stay put for the day and night…
