NYM Railway and Ormesby Hall England

Day 16/England 12
Travelled:107km
Stay: Tudhoe, The Green Tree Pub- free parking, water (meal/drinks £21) N54.7140 W1.5964
Visited: Goathland and Grosmont Stations NYMR (North Yorkshire Moors Railway), Ormesby Hall National Trust (£5.70pp)

This morning we set off through the Moors and down to Goathland Railway Station. It has lots of charm and character and is set in the 1920’s. For Harry Potter fans it was Hogsmeade station in the first film and also filmed in the Heartbeat TV series. We chatted to the workers and gleamed some insight on the workings of the Railway.

After some breakfast we drove down, through and up out of Beck Hole. A little narrow and steep but Bluey managed well and we were glad there was not any traffic.

Travelling through the Moors once more we then descended down to Grosmont Station and we’re lucky enough to arrive just in time to watch the steam trains arrive. This station is quite different in its appearance with quaint timber painted buildings.

After the trains continued on their journey we had a chat to the owner of the Train/bus model store. I have never realized (or thought about) how many different buses have been made. He had quite an extraordinary collection including cars and trains.

We would have stayed and explores the Moors area a bit more but the very cold weather was not inspiring. So we drove to Middlesbrough to visit Ormesby Hall, a Georgian mansion built in 1754 and owned by the Pennyman family. Once again we learnt about the family’s history and how they lived their lives as we ventured from room to room.

This was Ruth Pennymam’s bedroom and bathroom until 1983.

Some rooms had been set up with model railways. The most impressive was all handmade of buildings that actually exist.

This one was for the kids

We then had a quick shop at Tesco which also has the cheapest fuel we have seen so far £1.30. Then continued on our Northerly journey to a pub stay and we’re pleased with the parking, the pub meal and the pretty village.
