Helmsley England

Travelled:9km!
Visited/Stay:Helmsley- carpark free overnight, public toilets, bins N54.2461 W1.0666

Having had a very peaceful night in the forest we drove the short distance back down the road to the pretty market town of Helmsley.

We manage to park in the street for free and went for a walk through the town.

There are a variety of shops including a butcher and baker. We couldn’t resist a pasty for breakfast.

Since the sun was shining we decided to have a walk along The Cleveland Way which is a walk through the The North York Moors National Park that is 109miles long....we only did 5mi (10km) return to Rievaulx Abbey. It is in ruins now, but it was the first major Monastery built in Britain in 1132 by french monks. The walk offered us lovely views of the castle ruins of Helmsley (which can also be visited),  meadows, sheep and beautiful countryside.

We could have stopped for refreshments at the abbey but we were still full so we doubled back and reached town by lunchtime. We slipped in to the Royal Oak pub enjoying a refreshing drink and the traditional Sunday roast with Yorkshire pudding. No complaints... oh accept Mark didn’t like his ale. It’s always hard to choose as all pubs seem to have different ones on tap. Better luck next time.

So we walked around town again to help the digestion.

We had a look inside the All Saints Church to have a look at the impressive Al Frescoes.

A couple of interesting objects in the church!

After a bit of a rest, we took another walk and then moved into the overnight carpark.

. It’s been a bit of chaos in town due to the road we took last night being closed due to a police incident.
