Cambridge England

Travelled: 67km
Stay: Newmarket- horse training car park free, no facilities.N52.24711, E0.42645
Visited: Cambridge (Trumpington Free Parking and bus Ride for £3pp all day), Anglesey Abbey NT (free members).

It took us about an hour to get to the Trumpington P&R near Cambridge. We followed hints in P4N regarding the over 2.1m access at the second entrance and found the designated camper van parking easily enough. We then hopped on the bus and we were in town just after 9am. We fortified ourselves with a sandwhich from Prêt a Manger and then followed a walking tour from our Eyewitness Travel books. For those who don’t know Cambridge is famed for its 31 colleges making it a university town. The first college, Peterhouse, was founded in 1284. Many followed including King’s college, Trinity College, St John’s and Magdalene which houses Samuel Pepy’s diaries. Unfortunately all but 2 were closed for visiting due to exams. So we contented ourselves with admiring the architecture including the Mathematical Bridge built in 1749 and strolling along ‘the backs’ of some of the universities that are on the Cam River.

We tasted the sticky Chelsea Bun from Fitzbillies Bakery.

Then we had a quick visit of the museum before catching the bus back to Bluey. On our way out of town we stopped at Asda shops to stock up on supplies and then drove 15mins to Anglesey Abbey. Being National Trust members we were able to visit this lovely property for free. The house and gardens were restored in 1926 by Lord Fairhaven who later donated it to the National Trust in 1966. The house has been kept as he had left it, which is quite unique.

There were 114 acres of gardens that we only were able to visit a small portion as it began to rain.

After our visit it was time to make our way to our chosen P4N spot for tonight in Newmarket.  This town has been the headquarters of British horse racing since 1622. The Tattersalls auction house is in the centre of town. Other places to visit are the National Stud and Horseracing Museum.
