Falkland & Dunkeld Scotland

Day30/Scotland 7
Travelled:77km
Stay: near Dunkeld- Rumbling Bridge carpark N56.5509 W3.6339
Visited: Falkland & Palace (National Trust £13pp), Dunkeld (parking £1/hr)

After our morning coffee we made our way to Falkland. The countryside is so beautiful and lush (probably because of all that rain!). Arriving early we easily found a parking in the street but after having breakfast we realised we were in a 30mins zone. So we moved to the outer streets and then walked back to have a look around this pretty village. For those who are interested several scenes of Outlander where filmed here. The main industry used to be  weaving. There is only one factory of three, still open but now they produce plastic bags.

The main tourist attraction is the Renaissance Palace which was designed as a hunting lodge for the Stuart Kings. Unfortunately it fell into disrepair during the Thomas Cromwell period.

No photos allowed inside so here are a few from google...

The chapel.

The study.

King James VI bed.

It was frequently visited by Mary Queen of Scots who enjoyed playing Royal tennis.
The courts are the oldest in Britain.

In 1887 the 3rd Marquess of Bute bought the estates and began restoring it. It is still owned by the family, although run by the National Trust. We enjoyed exploring the lovely gardens.

We then decided to go and visit Dunkeld.

The village situated on the River Tay was destroyed in the 1689 battle between the Jacobites (defeated) and the Cameronian Regiment.

We went to see the Cathedral set in lovely park land on the banks of the river.

Inside we read about the history of the village.

We walked back along the river and then returned to Bluey driving 4km out of town to a quiet spot in the forest. After dinner we enjoyed a walk.
