Housestead Roman Fort England

Day 18/ England 14
Travelled:121km
Stay: Newcastle Upon Tyne- free large parking N54.9705 W1.5870
Visited: Housesteads Roman Fort/Hadrian’s Wall, parking £3/3hrs, National Trust £8.70pp

It did not stop raining today. We waited it out in the morning and then decided to put our wet weather gear on and go to visit Housesteads. It is the most complete example of a Roman fort in Britain. It was built within 10 years of AD122, when work on the wall began, and was garrisoned by an 800 strong infantry regiment until the 4th Century. It was one of 15 forts along the wall. The granaries were a later addition to the fort which were well built to withstand heavy loads. The commanding officer’s house was the only building to have underfloor heating. The latrines are very well preserved. We also had a look inside the small museum and watched a short film. After getting out of the rain and cold we drove to Newcastle Upon Tyne and kept warm in Bluey watching the rain.

  1. Hi Mireille & Mark...just catching up with your blog, it seems you're experiencing much the same weather as we're having here in Brittany...it's not great being cold and wet but we all do the best we can, you're certainly seeing heaps in spite of the weather, love your photos! We're now in Concarneau and will be here for the next week with friends so no, or very little cycling and a chance to stay warm and dry, hopefully this awful weather will change for the better sooner rather than later. Stay well, stay safe & carry on travelling! M&J xx
