Göta Canal

Travelled: 244km
Visited: Gota Canal 58.4980 16.2617
Stay: Helgenas - free Motorhome parking, lake views, no services atm but should be completed August 2017. Nice spot. 57.9988 16.5028

As soon as we woke up we were out of Stockholm before the peak traffic. We stopped down the road for our morning coffee and then further on at a rest area with a service point.

Just before Soderkoping we turned off the E22 and drove down a road to where it intersected with the Gota Canal. The 190km canal with its 58 locks, was built in the early 1800's to link Gotenburg on the west coast to Soderkoping on the Baltic Sea. The total journey between these two towns is 614km.  We stopped on the roadside picnic area and shortly after we witnessed the rolling bridge in action.

We then strolled along the canal  to where there were 8 locks in close proximity. It took a boat just over an hour to be through them all.

After we left and we're approaching the town, there was a traffic jam due to the road being closed so it could lift up to allow more canal boats through.

Then we were off again and about 70km later we headed 1km off the E22 to have a look at Motorhome parking. It was so nice we decided to stay and have a relaxing afternoon. The retired major from the Swedish army who purchased the land a couple of years ago, was working hard back filling a trench for the new service point he is installing. Mark felt sorry for him so went to give him a hand as he was desperate for a bit of physical work. I on the other hand did some bookwork!
