An Australian couple travelling in Europe (2013+) in a motorhome (Bluey), exploring Australia in a caravan (2009-22) and a self built Isuzu expedition 4 x 4 motorhome (Buster) 2023+
On our explorations of Kakadu National Park today, we saw some fascinating Aboriginal rock art.
After very ordinary sleep due to the heat and being attacked by mosquitoes during the night, we had our coffee and drove 3km from camp to Ubirr. It was a very pleasant 1km walk to various rock art sites.
The top of the rocky lookout gave us 360° views including that of the Nadal floodplain
So many motorhomes when we returned to Buster.
We drove 30ish km back to Arnhem highway and then to Jabiru, which is the main township in Kakadu, providing a range of essential services. We used the dump point and had a quick drive around. We did spot the famous Crocodile Hotel but its best view is from above to appreciate the design. As we didn’t need anything we continued on back out and turned off onto Kakadu Highway. We stopped at Bowali Visitor Centre which had an interpretive display and film about the park wildlife and plants.
Further along the road we turned off to Nourlangie Rock. We did the 1.5km walk past some rock art.
We climbed up to Kunwarddewardde lookout which had some impressive views of the surrounding escarpments and the extensive Savannah woodlands below.
On our way back we saw some more rock art and an ancient Aboriginal shelter.
Next we drove into Anbangbang Billabong, said to be one of Kakadu’s most attractive with the escarpment as a backdrop.
Back on the highway we drove to the turn off to Jim Jim Falls. It was 50km/1hr of dirt track with a few corrugations.
We arrived at Karnamarr campground at 2:15pm and set up for the night ($15pp toilet/showers), calling it a day.
175km today
