Crocodile Country NT

It was an early start out of Gunn Point beach, driving down to the south end and discovering an easy way out back to the bitumen.

Back on the Stuart Highway we stopped to top up with fuel and food, then we turned off again on to Arnhem Highway. We took a photo of the boxing croc at Humpty Doo.

A bit further along was the Pathfinder Original Jumping Crocodile Cruise ($68pp) which we booked yesterday for the 11am, 1 hour open-air journey along the Adelaide River, where our knowledgeable skipper guided us up close to witness the incredible power and majesty of Australia’s deadliest reptile, the famed Australian Salt Water Crocodile in their untamed WILD habitat.

Baby crocs… replicas of the big thing

Best jump

Black and whistling kites .. getting some food too.

After our tour we continued east and stopped for lunch on the banks of the Mary River.

Not far from here we turned off the highway and drove 54km to Sandy Camp ($10pp) in the Mary River National Park.  The last 30km was along a pretty reasonable dirt road. Arriving at 2:30pm we managed to find a lovely spot in the shade.

These cows kept going up and down along the fence line

Later we went to have a look at the crocodile lookout over the freshwater and the barrage that was built to separate the fresh and salt water. With up to 15 saltwater crocodiles per kilometre, the Mary River has one of the highest croc densities in the world. Unfortunately we didn’t spot one.

The freshwater side

Obviously not good sign readers..
