Karijini NP Kalamina and Waeno Gorges WA

Wow! It was another spectacular day exploring the gorges in Karijini National Park. Before we left our camp spot at Dales we took a photo of one of the ever present termite mounds that have been in abundance since we crossed the Tropic of Capricorn.

We then drove along Banjima Road to the turn off to Kalamina Falls.

The 6km track from here is classified 4x4 so we decided to air down the tyres about 10psi for a softer ride over the corrugations. We were the 2nd car to arrive. We had breakfast and set off on this 3km walk, class 4.

We descended the rocky steps and looked at the small waterfall.

We then walked along the gorge floor which has the most water in it so far, with lots of lovely water holes and cascades.

There was a bit of rock edge manoeuvres but we made it to the end without getting our feet wet. The trail ended at the Rock Arch Pool.

1hr and 15mins later we were back in Buster and making our way to the Weano Gorge area.

Shortly after we parked up, a couple in a Cooee truck came beside us, so we had a chat.

Then we descended down into Hancocks Gorge. There were numerous step ladders to help us down to the gorge floor.

Then we had a bit a a shimmy along the rock edge. But it was so worth it to end up at Kermits Pool. Such a magical spot and of course we had to have a swim.

After returning back up to the surface, we made our way back down again into Lower Weano Gorge.

This time we had to scramble  down  rock steps then along the gorge floor via some narrow crevasses. We are lucky that there is no water here at the moment.

We arrived at the handrail which opens up to a large rock amphitheatre and pool. Unfortunately too stagnant to swim in. But soooo impressive.

Once back to the top we ventured to Oxer Lookout viewing parts of the gorge system we couldn’t walk through.

Jim, a rescuer, sadly lost his life here.

We then drove out of the National park to Mt. Bruce free camp. We found a spot with a view of the 2nd highest mountain in WA at 1235m alt. It is climbable but we will leave that to others …
