Day 79 Germany 3
Travelled:173km to Ludwigsburg (parking €5, castle €8.50pp) and then to stay in Kirchberg motorhome parking area (49.2039, 9.9834)Today was just one of those days…
Trying to get around Stuttgart was a bit of a challenge to start with… roadworks, wrong turns and having to double back… it seems to be a constant theme in Germany as every time we have visited we always come across diversions and road closures… anyway we eventually arrived in Ludwigsburg. We found a spot to park nearby to the castle for €5/11 hours.
It was a short walk through the gardens to the main entrance and ticket office.
The castle can only be visited with a tour, one for the Duke’s quarter and another for the Countess’s quarter. (Both for €12.50pp). The English ones were at 1:15 and 3:15. As we didn’t want to stay that long we thought we would do one tour in German at 10:30 and the English tour at 1:15.
So off we went with the guide through the Duke’s quarters in German. Initially the residential palace was built in 1704 as a hunting lodge, however in 1718 it became his principal lodgings and so undertook further works that were completed by 1733. Our guide book tells us that it was built for his mistress.
As we had a bit of time before the next tour we sort out a beer hall in the town and couldn’t resist another schnitzel.
When we returned we were told the guide was running 20mins late and we should come back. When we showed up later it was to find out that the tour had left without us! Feeling a tad frustrated and disappointed that we missed out on the Countess’s quarter’s we made our way back to Bluey. We set a course for our spot tonight in Kirchberg 1.5 hours away via some lovely countryside as we avoid the nightmare autobahn.
