Wurzburg to Bamberg Germany

Day 65 Wednesday 8 July 2026

We reduced our visits to 3 towns today - Wurburg, Dettelbach and Bamberg (2018)

It had been a peaceful night in the forest and as soon as we had our coffee this morning we headed into the city of Wurzburg to beable find a parking spot, which we did near the river for €3/24hrs. Since we had danishes for breakfast yesterday we thought to start the day a bit healthier with fruit and yogurt this morning.

Then into the city we walked. It is a historic city in northern Bavaria and famous for its grand Baroque architecture, rich Franconian wine culture, and its status as the starting point of the Romantic Road. It sits along the Main River and offers a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly atmosphere driven in large part by its large student population. Although 80% of the city was destroyed during a 20mins bombing raid near the end of WWII in March 1945, many prominent building were rebuilt to their former glory.

We strolled past the Residenz (palace) and through the gardens. It was commissioned by 2 prince bishops in 1744.

The two imposing towers of St. Kilian Cathedral stand out above the roof tops and is the fourth largest Romanesque church in Germany.

Next door was the Neumunster a Romanesque basilica from the 11th century which was built over the grave of St. Kilian and his companions, who were murdered here as missionaries.

We walked through the market in the main square.

The Grafeneckart is the oldest part of the Würzburg town hall

and was originally the seat of an episcopal official.

Here there was a display about the WWII bombing.

When then walked over the old main bridge, the oldest bridge in Würzburg.

There are 12 characteristic statues of saints on it.

From here we had views of the Marienberg fortress which was the seat of the Würzburg prince-bishops for centuries. It combines medieval fortifications with baroque extensions and offers a fantastic view over the city. Today it houses museums and historical exhibitions.

We then made our way back to Bluey…met som aussies on a APT cruise.

Stopped at a dump point just out of town

Not too far away was the small village of Dettelbach. Although it was mentioned in our guide book as a handsome village behind intact defensive walls with a medieval Rathaus and eccentric looking church.. we were a bit underwhelmed.

So we decided to drive an hour or so to Bamberg. We had fond memories of visiting here in 2018. We arrived at 1:45pm and got a spot €18/24 hrs in the popular stellplatz situated next to the Main Danube Canal and within 15mins walk to the historic centre. It’s a charming and very popular tourist destination.

After enjoying a stroll around we enjoy a beer in one of the many beer halls.

On our way back to Bluey we stop at the recommended local Sternla beer hall and have some dinner… delicious.
