Day 69 Sunday 12 July 2026
As it turned out this was to be our last day in Germany, exploring Freiburg for the 3rd time (2014,2016). We ended up on Rhine Island just across the border in France near the German town, Breisach.
The day began with a lovely drive through the pretty countryside as we descended down into the valley to Freiburg.
Although we have visited the city twice before we thought it would be a fitting town to end our short trip (9 days) in Germany.
It is one of Germany's prettiest Old Towns, with its characteristic bächle – the narrow channels of water that run alongside the pavements.
Being a Sunday, parking was free and at 8:30am there was lots of spaces available close to the historic centre. Mark listened to 3/4 of the Bombers game before heading in.

We treated ourselves to another slice of Black Forest cake at a lovely cafe.
Then through the Martinstor gate we went. It was built in 1202.

| This was a huge building..appears to be a government building now |
The huge red sandstone gothic cathedral has its spires rising up above the town, in the market square. We listen to the first 10mins of the 12 noon mass.
In the square is also the bright red Historic Kaufhaus, built in 1530 during the-reign of the Habsburg empire.
We also pas the renaissance Rathaus. .. and a few other buildings.
By now it was time for our last german beer and meal..and in what better place than at the local brewery beer garden. The band was playing and the tables looked full but here you can slide in to any gap at the trestle tables. So we enjoyed a couple of beers and some lunch, Mark had a pork knuckle with potato salad and I had smoked trout with salad.
