Ardèche, France

Day 7- Sunday 11th May 2026

Today we meandered around … driving along the Rhône, seeing castles propped on rocky outcrops and hills, winding roads through forests and beautiful green countryside.

After leaving the aire in Tournon sur Rhône we headed down the D86 through the fertile Rhône valley growing grapes and cherries in abundance. We spotted a small castle perched on rock sitting above the village of CHATEAUBOURG and stopped to have a closer look.

There was also a lovely little parking spot for motorhomes that we could have easily stayed.  But the day was young and so we continued south to the impressively situated CHATEAU DE CRUSSOL just west of the large city of Valence. The road to the parking area was steep and narrow but do able.  Its ruins are a Natura 2000 medieval heritage site. The earliest parts of the château date back to the 10th century.  We enjoyed our hike up to the highest tower and were rewarded with amazing views.

From here we turned west  and wiggled our way over the Col de Fans (754m) then into our next stop in LAMASTRE. It is a picturesque town in the Ardèche department of southern France, nestled in the valley of the river Doux. It serves as a gateway to the Regional Natural Park of the Ardèche Mountains

Our next stop is ST.AGREVE, perched on the plateau of Haut-Vivarais at an altitude of 1,050 m, it serves as a gateway between the Ardèche and Haute-Loire regions. It is surrounded by rolling hills, diverse landscapes, and is a hub for outdoor activities such as hiking and biking.

We settled on an aire that sounded lovely in a quaint little village of CHAUDEYROLLES , another 30mins away. At 1,280m alt. It is nestled in the heart of the Massif Central and serves as a tranquil gateway to the Mont Mézenc region, famous for its unique volcanic landscapes and extensive hiking trails.

The weather is a-bit chillier up here and the rain comes and goes so we will see how we go to do some walks around here tomorrow.
