Yass & Gunning, NSW Australia

Day 26-27 Sunday 25th- Monday 26th October 2026

This morning it was a 65km drive on the Hume Highway to Yass. We managed to find a reasonable flat spot at the RV park next to the sports ground.

We then went to explore the town’s history and heritage by taking a walk to view the grand Victorian and Edwardian buildings, such as Yass Courthouse, built in the boom of the late 19th century.

It was quite a warm day (30°) and the promised rain and storms did eventually come to cool things down.

Unfortunately the next day started a bit earlier than usual due to the resident rooster.

So we had our coffee and got to woollies just after it opened at 7am.

We then went to see Mr Humes’s grave.

Then stopped to have a wonder around his house, Cooma Cottage.

It’s also where the Hume and Hovell trail begins.

We then get back on the Hume Highway for about 40km until we pull over in Gunning,  which lies in the centre of NSW’s fine wool growing region.

We find a spot beside Meadow Creek, Barbour Park which offers free short-term stays for caravans and campers and is a very short walk into town that also has some lovely historical buildings.
