Brachina and Parachilna Gorges (Flinders Ranges) SA

Travelled: Saturday-287km via Hawker to Nooltana Creek Rest area, Sunday-132km via Brachina Gorge to Parachilna Gorge (-31.128560, 138.517504)

An hour and a half hours drive from Kimba we rolled into Port Augusta where we fuelled up and got some groceries. We then headed towards the Flinders Rangers. Our first stop was in Quorn, a lovely town with its old style charm. It is often chosen for historic scenes in movies and today was no exception. It is also popular for the Pichi Richi railway (the first leg of the old Ghan route to Alice Springs).

We continue on to Hawker, known as the ‘Hub of the Flinders Ranges’.

After a walk around we decide to call it a day at Nooltana Creek.

Sunday morning sees us turning off the main road to Brachina Gorge.

The road follows the river bed which cuts through dramatic sawtooth ridges.

We also manage to spot a couple of Yellow-footed Rock Wallabies.

We retrace our path and stop at Parachilna, an old railway station of the old Ghan railway. There is a well known hotel here that serves ‘feral food’ (kangaroo, emu, goat and camel) which is closed atm.

From here we ahead east to Parachilna Gorge.

We choose a camping spot along the river bed and spend a relaxing afternoon enjoying the sun.
