Travelled:302km through Poland to Trakai Lithuania
Stay: Trakai parking €0.80c/hr 8 - 22, no services GPS N54.6503 E24.9226
This morning we mainly travelled on the smaller roads through the very pretty countryside, with its tree lined roads and undulating hills. It is so green here for one reason, rain, and it was falling today.
We stopped in Suwalki to spend the remainder of our zlotys before crossing the border into Lithuania.
The most distinguishing difference in landscape was the more prominence of wooden buildings. We arrived in Trakai just after 5pm (we lost an hour due to the time difference) and collected some maps and pamphlets from the tourist office. Although we were told the only place we could stay overnight was at the campsite, we decided to try and park where Our Tour had stayed last year. There are no signs disallowing this so we will see. It is the low season as tourism goes, but the parking lot is very popular with the locals as it offers a great view of the lake and castle.
The Gothic red brick castle set on an island, is the main thing to see here, so much so, it is apparently almost the top tourist attraction in the whole country with 300,000 visitors per year. It is the only structure of its kind in Eastern Europe and is nestled in the only Historical National Park.
The town itself has some charm with its coloured wooden houses but it feels like a resort town which is understandable when it is only 28km from the capital Vilnius.
