Australia NSW Coolah Tops

Australia NSW Coolah Tops
We left our campsite in the Warrumbungles nice and early, stopping at the Whitegum lookout to see the view of the area one last time.

We were hoping to go to the Siding Spring Observatory, Australia’s largest optical telescope, but unfortunately it’s closed due to Covid and the 4km road was unsuitable for caravans.

The area around Coonabarabran is dotted with more than 45 telescopes.

From here there are 5 solar drives with billboards about the planets as we travel further away.

The time was correct!

We had a quick walk along the main street of town and continued to Binnaway. It used to be a bustling railway town reflected in a tribute in the Main Street.

Different shaped silo.

We popped in at the Black Stump rest area for a cuppa.

The drive was very picturesque as we drove up to Coolah Tops.

We unhooked the van at The Barracks campsite and went off to explore the park. We admired the amazing views from Bundella  lookout.

It wasn’t far from here, about a 1km, to The Pinnacle - a rocky outcrop with more spectacular views.

We then drove out to the Pines campsite for a look.
Bonus! Split wood left behind..

We continued along the road a little bit further to Brackens Hut.

Hope the snake is long gone..

Enjoying the sun.
Tin chimney
Enjoying a scratch...

Needs a mattress I think..
Nice big fireplace

We then doubled back to Cox’s creek where there are the remains of a sawmill.

There used to be a large demand for timber for railway tracks. Unfortunately half the park is closed during the winter months  and our legs were still sore from yesterday’s walk that we didn’t brave the steep walk at Norfolk Falls (next time). It was a chilly afternoon so we started the fire and then went for a stroll from camp to see the ancient forest of towering grass trees. It was an eerie to walk amongst these tall and oddly shaped trees. Quite unique.

We decided on a early bbq dinner and then stoked up the fire until it was too cold to stay outside.
