The Niederwald Monument representing Germania commemorating the formation of the German Empire in 1877

We didn't travel far to our next stop in Bacharach. There are only a couple of places to stay before Koblenz and as we managed to get a river front spot here we decided to stay.

Although we stayed here 2 years ago, there are always new things to discover.  As we approached the town  we could still see most of its 14th century fortified walls with the very pretty tower gateways.
There are plenty half timbered buildings many are restaurants and shops selling touristy things.

On our way up to the castle which is now a youth hostel, we took a wrong turn and met a 82 yo German from Berlin, who after living in Melbourne for 2 years, went to live in America for 30 years but now lives here with his partner of 20 years whom he had first met back in 1954. It didn't take him long to open his garage to show us his amazing number plate collection. Then he showed us his Austin Healey 3000 (his Mercedes Roadstar was at the mechanics! ). His memorabilia room was the best with lots of model cars and trophies. He was also very proud of his work as painter/decorator and showed us the list of famous actors and singers etc he had done work for. A very interesting character and we felt privileged that he shared his life's story with us.

We eventually found the path up to the castle and we were rewarded with some lovely views of the a Rhine and the village below.

Flood water levels. We were surprised that the highest was in 1992.

We then returned to Bluey and enjoyed a relaxing afternoon watching the river traffic and trains go up and down the river.
