The next morning we set off again but this time in the rain. We stopped at Lake Buffalo to have some breakfast then drove through Myrtleford, resisting the temptation of a pie from the bakery in town!
At the roundabout near Porepunkah we took the turnoff to the Buckland Valley. Having camped here 13 years ago, we always said we should come back. We weren’t disappointed. The first couple of nights we stayed at the 2nd along - Camp Flat, on the other side of the river. In the late 1800’s there were 1000 people living here trying to make it rich on the alluvial gold found in the area. Our spot overlooked over a lovely waterhole which was great to swim in on these hot summer days. There was also a couple of 4wd tracks that offered us some walking opportunities.
someone had a sense of humour...
It was hard to leave but we wanted to explore the many other campsites along here.
There were several large grassy and treed sites with river frontage and not surprisingly a couple of large groups occupied these spots. We were surprised there was no one at The Bend campsite. We picked a spot that offered a bit of sun for our solar and river frontage close to a waterhole to cool ourselves. It was unbelievable that we had this spot all to ourselves for the 3 nights here!
Unfortunately the only walking from camp was along the road but luckily there wasn’t much traffic including the workers and trucks going up to the road that are building a new bridge at Beveridges Station Camp.
